Industrial Ethernet

Industrial Ethernet has changed dramatically in last few years and we are keeping on top of the technology. Traditionally Ethernet was used to transport data from the plant to the office. Some new generation PLCs are now built on web servers, they can access distributed I/O, and pass information between each other over Ethernet. How is that of any benefit to you? …Well there are at least two clear benefits. 1) Ethernet is a well know technology with several independent vendors. Having independent vendors means low prices. You can shop around for the best deals on components. 2) Communication over Ethernet is under continuous improvement. Things such as: very high baud rate, Web access, SMS, Email, and other know features are now available at the PLC and HMI level.

Machines with PLCs on Industrial Ethernet (such as Profinet) could be made Plug and work. This is a new concept in the world of automation. Different machines can be interconnected and put to work immediately using Ethernet, with little or none setup to be done.
